Working for the Podium

On super cold mornings—or on days that are just too full—I head out here to my workshop and pop a race of some sort on the tv and pedal the trainer.

You know, I really love being out on the trail or grinding some gravel, but I also weirdly love this trainer … because I love the process of pedaling. It helps me think through how to be most efficient and how to engage different muscle groups. And, the positive endorphins I get that lead to clearer thinking and better sleep.

This summer, I overheard a conversation between my son and daughter as they were discussing their training plan for an upcoming training block. He said, “You can’t just hope for results. You have to do the work to make them happen.”

Smart kid.

I know that putting in time on the trainer (especially when I can’t go outside) will help produce maximum fun when I’m out riding trails or skiing. And those are the results that I’m working towards.

Most of us are in planning season right now. We’re sitting down at the table and figuring out what work we need to do in order to produce the results we want.

Just like an athlete, we can’t just hope we find the podium. We have to make sure that we’re doing the important long range work that moves the needle:

  • Understanding consumers or guests
  • Figuring out of how they can have the best experience, and figuring out how to keep them coming back
  • Building a brand that stands out from the competition because we’ve put in the proper effort to create a unique POV

That’s the important work that we need to do as brands to find the podium.

And that’s the work that helps us carve out our own path to make the competition irrelevant.

See you out there!
